The Exquisite Corpses of Junior Surrealists

My sister has become the “Picture Lady” at my niece’s school, which means that she goes in to the classroom, tells the 3rd Graders about an artist, and then leads the class in an art project based on that artist’s work. How cool is that? And, since I’m the one in the family with an art degree, I sometimes get the pleasure of consulting on the projects.

Today was Salvador Dali day. I’ve always loved Dali (especially as a little punker high school art student), and was so excited to hear about today’s project. What kid wouldn’t love Dali? Ants! Spiders! Melty things! As it turned out, the only thing my sister was allowed to show was The Persistence of Memory, because of parent complaints about Dali. Apparently Central Illinois isn’t ready for 3rd Grade surrealism (boo!)

What she did get to do was make Exquisite Corpses with the class (though she naturally didn’t call them that. See above.) That’s where each artist draws a part of a body, not seeing what the other artists have drawn.

The kids really knocked these out, and they’re fabulous. This one is my favorite. Guess which part my niece drew?

They’re all awesome, though, and so wonderfully surreal.

If you fancy this kind of thing, I highly recommend the blog Art Projects for Kids, where art teacher Kathy Barbro shares stuff like this all the time. Kids always need more art, and many thanks to Elizabeth’s 3rd Grade class for the lovely artwork!
