Thanksgiving Inflation

Tonight we participated in the bizarre spectacle that is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade “Inflation Event”. In this time-honored tradition, you get a sneak peek at the gigantic balloons before they float down the parade route tomorrow.

In reality, this meant joining a few thousand other families in a corral that wraps around the Museum of Natural History. The point of entry is at 79th and Columbus, so you’re treated to inching along in a horde for a half an hour before you get a glimpse of yellow around the southwest corner. OMG! It’s a semi-inflated Spongebob caught in a net! Honey, give me the camera!

Did I mention that it was raining, and we were there just as all of the kids should have been eating dinner? Mayhem.

The balloons should have been awesome, but it was really quite strange. Hey, there’s Abby Cadabby faceplanted in the street!

There’s Horton taking a Dora foot to the face!

OK, I’ll admit. Spiderman did look pretty awesome, with web hand at the ready.

The silver lining of the event was that the crowd was enough to convince Olive that she doesn’t actually want to go down to see the parade in person tomorrow. Whew! We’ll enjoy it like everyone else – from the comfort of our living room with a nice mug of hot chocolate. For that, I am thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving!
