The Not-Its Are It
To this day, the ’90s remain my favorite decade for music, due in no small part to the prevalence of chick rockers. During that time, you would have found me blasting bands like Lush and Mary’s Danish and Elastica from my car. Listening to the Seattle band The Not-Its makes that era feel like yesterday. As it turns out, Not-Its lead singer Sarah Shannon was a part of that ’90s chick rock scene with her band, Velocity Girl.
Olive and I have been rocking out to their latest album, We Are The Not-Its. I love it when we find albums that she and I both like to listen to. They’ve got a great rockin’ sound, and the songs are immediately accessible to kids, with songs like “When I’m Five”, “Dressin’ Up”, and “Let’s Birthday”. Just look at how much fun they’re having in their first video from the album, “Come Play at Our House”.
Our favorite track on the album is “Helicopter” for reasons close to Olive’s heart. She’s been talking lately about becoming a helicopter pilot when she grows up. She’ll build the helicopter from old car parts in her garage, and then she’ll paint it green with rainbows and unicorns. She plans to give rides every day to her two children and her three kittens. Today Olive said that the helicopter will have a snack bar and a radio from which she’ll play this song.
You can listen to all of the songs on The Not-Its website. Also, head over to Zooglobble where you can find the KidVid Tournament 2010 underway. The Not-Its have squeaked by in the first round, edging out Billy Kelly.
