Interview with a 9-Year-Old

by Amy Kraft on June 4, 2014

It’s hard to believe my wee little girl is now a beautiful 9-year-old. What an amazing age… still so interested in the world around her with little of the snark that goes so week with tweendom. And yet, she gave me answers to my annual interview questions with no interest in expanding on those thoughts. So, if you’ll indulge me, I’ll editorialize on her answers a bit.

First, a handful of things are carried over from last year’s interview. Don’t knock Harry Potter.

Favorite Book

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban [She’s increasingly been a nonstop reading factory this year, and yet, every so often, she comes back to Harry.]

Favorite Movie

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2

Favorite Museum

The Museum of Math [This may change tomorrow when we preview New York Hall of Science’s new Design Lab. Details to come!]

And then there are the new obsessions.

Favorite Country

Japan [This is a weird one to include, but she’s completely obsessed with Japan right now so it feels worth mentioning. For her birthday she only asked for “Japanese things.” Girl’s going to be doing origami and calligraphy until the end of time. I predict some Manga on this list next year.]

Favorite App

Plants vs Zombies 2 [Right there with ya, babe.]

Favorite TV Show

Jessie [Yes, this modern-day Silver Spoons was probably the most binge watched on Netflix, though Adventure Time  had a pretty good run.]

Favorite Toy

Rainbow Loom [I think we’ve spent $100,000 on small rubber bands this year. Rainbow Loom was also the gateway to learning things on YouTube, which brings me to…]

Favorite Thing on YouTube

Stampylonghead [Who am I kidding? There’s no “TV” anymore. I’m so old school. Even Netflix doesn’t get watched like it used to. She’s fully enrolled in the University of YouTube learning about anything and everything. Stampylonghead is of course teaching her all about Minecraft.]

Favorite Computer Game

Minecraft [Duh. What’s so funny is that the computer was abandoned for apps for a good long while, and now she mostly goes to the iPad to watch YouTube. She’s abandoned video games. She’s busy vying for my computer. And who are we kidding? While there are favorite things listed above, nothing is operating at the same level. The title of this post should really be Interview with a 9-year-old: Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft Minecraft…]

I Love this idea! May have to start doing this now. It’s only been a couple of months since the daughter turned 8…Plus including a favorite museum is pretty nifty. I talk to kids every day who look at me like I’m the most boring thing in the world when I say, “we saw this really cool thing at this one museum”…

Some kids though EAT. IT. UP. Can’t wait to see her thoughts on the one tomorrow. 😉

Funny, I was looking at my Timehop app which pulls from social media to show you what you were doing on this day in years past, and this time 5 years ago I was tweeting you about your interview with a 4 year old! My how time flies…and yet, how some things stay the same. Happy Birthday to dear Olive!

I just wish we still lived near one another!! Lucy and Olive are into SO many of the same things-I love it! Think of you all often-shoot me an email with your new address (card returned!). XO
